Summer is on the way! We probably don’t have to tell you that summertime here in Arizona can be sweltering hot. Heat can be very dangerous to our feline friends. Not only is Fluffy already wearing a fur coat, she also doesn’t have many ways to cool herself off. Read on as a Scottsdale, AZ vet offers tips on helping your kitty beat the heat.

Hammocks and raised beds are great for cats in warm climates. They allow air to pass beneath them, which will help keep your furry buddy cooler. To make a homemade cat hammock, you’ll need a coffee table or end table with four legs, and a piece of material. Cut the material so that it’s just a bit smaller than the tabletop, and attach it to the legs with rope or Velcro. Then, just tell your kitty to stay out of it. Fluffy will hop right in!

Keep Kitty Indoors

Kitties are much safer inside, where they aren’t exposed to hazards posed by cars, predators, or weather. Fluffy will also be much cooler indoors, in rooms cooled by fans or AC. Keep your cat safe and sound inside!

Ice Cubes

Did you know that cats use their paw pads to regulate temperature? There actually is a valid reason that Fluffy likes batting ice cubes around on the floor: it’s a great way for her to cool off.

Let The Furball Wander

As you may have noticed, cats are absolute experts at getting comfortable. If you let your feline pal wander freely through your home, she’ll naturally gravitate towards the coolest spot. You may very well find your kitty sprawled out on the kitchen or bathroom floor, as tile tends to stay quite cool. (Of course, Fluffy can make herself comfy in all sorts of unusual places and positions, but that’s another topic.)

Make sure that your furball always has plenty of fresh, clean water. Some cats prefer to drink running water. If you have ever caught Fluffy drinking from the sink, consider getting her a kitty fountain. (Note: excessive thirst is a red flag in cats, and warrants an immediate call to your vet.)
